First Year Seminar
The First Year Seminar (FYS) is a major requirement designed to support first-year and transfer students in their transition to LaGuardia. Students learn key concepts in their major, develop essential academic success skills, and get to know peers and the college. The course also emphasizes academic and career planning while introducing students to campus and co-curricular resources that promote success both in and beyond the classroom. In addition to meeting with the FYS instructor, students attend a weekly studio hour lab led by a Student Success Mentor (SSM), a successful LaGuardia student or graduate attending a four-year college who shares their own student experiences and guides students in the use of LaGuardia's digital tools and the creation of an ePortfolio. FYS students have access to LaGuardia's free online First Year Seminar textbook which features the experiences of successful LaGuardia students and graduates.
All LaGuardia students – including transfer students, must successfully complete the FYS to graduate. Transfer credit will not be awarded for another school’s first-year seminar course.
